Each month, the Ashland MFA Program receives calls for submissions and contest deadlines, which it publicizes in its monthly newsletter. Listed below are this month's calls for submissions.

Nonfiction on The Personal Aftermath of War
Hudson Whitman/Excelsior College Press has opened a call for stories, The Personal Aftermath of War, stories of coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan. The call is open to those who have served, as well as their families, spouses, relatives, friends, and anyone whose lives have been touched by these conflicts. Those selected will receive $200 + publication in a forthcoming anthology. Dario DiBattista, an instructor with the Veteran's Writing Project, will be editing the collection. Deadline is May 1, 2015.

Share Some Joy with Mason’s Road
Mason’s Road seeks fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, drama, and craft essays on the theme of “Joy.” Submission period ends May 15. Mason’s Road is sponsored and operated by the Fairfield University’s MFA in Creative Writing. Submission fee is $5 or $10 for entry in their literary prize as well.

The Southampton Review Needs Material for Summer Issue
The Southampton Review is now accepting submissions for consideration in our summer 2015 issue. Published twice annually by Stony Brook Southampton, we welcome MFA faculty and student submissions in poetry, fiction, memoir, the personal essay, and art. Our reading period ends on May 1, 2015.

Trainless Magazine is now open to fiction and nonfiction submissions. We publish well read and novice writers, and we thoroughly appreciate submissions from students. Trainless publishes creative nonfiction articles on the themes of travel, athleticism, and culture, as well as fiction on most cultural subjects.

Barking Sycamores Summer/Fall 2015 Pop Culture Theme
Barking Sycamores is a literary journal publishing poetry, short fiction (1000 words or less), and art by neurodivergent (autistic, ADHD, bipolar, dyslexic, etc.) writers and artists. Issue 6 (Summer/Fall 2015) will be our Pop Culture Issue.  We seek submissions on any aspect of popular culture -- film, television, music, literature, artwork, humour, internet memes... you get the idea. Commentary on, satire of, or works inspired by pop culture are encouraged. While we are happy to consider persona pieces in which fictional characters speak, we regret that we cannot consider fan fiction for this issue. And as always, we also seek essays on neurodivergence and how it impacts the creation of literary works. The philosophy of our journal is unique, so we ask that interested writers consult our submission guidelines before sending any work to us. Submission period: April 20 – June 19, 2015.

Cartridge Lit is a literary magazine celebrating the intersection of literature and video games. We are currently seeking submissions in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Multi-Media Literary Experiment
THREAD at Yale which debuts this summer, June 7-10, 2015, is a gathering of professional journalists and storytellers that does not care whether you work in print, radio, podcasting, or some form we haven’t even thought of yet. Short Stories Sought for New Digital Magazine
IMAGINATE Magazine launches June 1, 2015. This quarterly digital magazine is geared toward both readers and writers – those who love the written word. We noticed a need for reading material of short creative pieces, so we began soliciting short stories, flash fiction, poetry, and nonfiction articles that we’ll combine into themed issues each quarter. They are currently accepting short stories for their September issue.

Poetry of the Sacred Contest
The Center for Interfaith Relations' Institute for Contemplative Practice is pleased to announce the 2015 Poetry of the Sacred Contest. Submissions will be accepted online until midnight on Friday, May 1, 2015. Winning authors receive a monetary prize and their work will be published in Parabola Magazine.

Poetry and Prose Contests at The Fugue
The Fugue, a biannual print and digital journal of art and literature, announces its annual poetry and prose contests are now open. Submissions will be accepted through May 1. The winner in each category will receive $1000 and publication in Fugue's 25th anniversary issue to be released later this year. Entry fee is $15.

Glimmer Train – Short Story New Writer Award and Very Short Fiction Contest
Open only to emerging writers whose fiction has not appeared in any print publication with a circulation over 5,000. First prize 1,500, second and third place cash prizes and publication as well. Most submissions runs 1,500-6,000 words, but as long as 12,000 words are accepted. Deadline is May 31. Very Short Fiction contest ends April 30.

The Moth International Short Story Prize
Donal Ryan judges this year's Moth Short Story Prize, with prizes of €3,000, a week-long writing retreat at Circle of Misse in France (including a €250 travel stipend) and €1,000. There's a word limit of 6,000, and an entry fee of €12. Closing date is June 30, 2015.

Peseroff Prize for Poetry for Single Poem
Breakwater Review is proud to announce The Peseroff Prize: publication and $1,000 for a single poem. The Peseroff Prize honors Joyce Peseroff’s work as a poet, teacher, editor, innovator, and mentor. She helped found the MFA Program in Creative Writing at the University of Massachusetts Boston, served as its first director, and retired from teaching in 2014.  Submit up to three poems and a $10 entry fee from Jan. 1 to May 15. There are no restrictions on length, content, or form: “it’s all poetry.” All submissions will be considered for publication. Winners will be announced in September.

Loraine Williams Poetry Prize for Single Poem
The Georgia Review is excited to announce the third annual Loraine Williams Poetry Prize---$1,000 and publication in The Georgia Review for a single poem, originally written in English and never before published either in print or online. The submission period is 1 April 2015–15 May 2015, with the winning poem to be announced on 15 August 2015 and published in the Spring 2016 issue. Poems may be submitted online or by post.

Telling Stories Writer’s Competition
As part of the On the Same Page Literary Festival (September 15-19 in Ashe County, NC) the Page Crafter’s Prize recognizes writers of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry with cash awards. Winning writers will be recognized at the On the Same Page concluding luncheon September 19. The Page Crafter’s competition is designed to encourage and acknowledge emerging writers and to reinforce the On the Same Page Literary Festival’s commitment to celebrating the creation of new literary work. Conferences

River Teeth Creative Nonfiction Conference
Join the community of nonfiction writers in Ashland, Ohio, for a weekend of manuscript consultations, seminars, and readings, all focused on the craft of nonfiction. The conference will emphasize essay, memoir, literary journalism, and building the kind of relationships that sustain writers throughout the writing process, from early draft all the way through to book promotion. Featured speakers are Cheryl Strayed and Jerald Walker. Discount for early registration ends April 15. Full price registration is open until May 8. A limited amount of space is left.

Registration Open for HippoCamp Conference for Creative Nonfiction
Hippocampus Magazine is an online publication set out to entertain, educate and engage writers and readers of creative nonfiction. HippoCamp, August 7-9, is an in-the-flesh extension of that three-fold mission. Sundress Academy Summer Retreats in Poetry and Fiction

Elk River Four-Day Retreat
The 2015 Elk River Writer’s Workshop will be held from October 22 to October 25 at Chico Hot Springs Resort in spectacular Paradise Valley, Montana. The workshop brings together prominent writers and students for four days of seminars, workshops, lectures and readings in a small group environment. Writing Assistants Needed at AU
Ashland University is seeking five writing assistants to serve as writing tutors to other graduate students. Graduate programs you might work with include American History and Government, Business, Education, Health and Risk Communications, Leadership Studies, Nursing & Health Science, or Criminal Justice. Summer Editorial Assistant Internship with RHINO
RHINO poetry journal in Evanston, Ill., is seeking one or two promising young poets to serve as summer interns. Qualifications include a BA and at least one year of relevant grad school, a love of poetry and general knowledge of contemporary poems and its traditions. Where are you from and how do you use your surroundings to write? I'm from southwest Indiana originally. Rolling hills, farmland, corn, wheat. LOTS of corn and wheat. My landscapes have affected me heavily in my writing. All that tall crop and the sometimes isolating farmland in the autumn during sunset can do a lot to make one feel...creeped out? Hah. I've tried to use my small town upbringing to good effect, as well. I grew up most of life in a working class to middle-class home in the rust belt. AU Ranked in Poets & Writers MFA Index

The annual MFA issue of Poets & Writers is out, and Ashland University's MFA program is listed among the 26 low-residency programs featured. Of the 47 low-residency MFA programs currently available in the United States (Association of Writers and Writing Programs), AU ranks second in job placement, fourth in fellowship placement, and 11th in selectivity.  While the program did not place in a six-year popularity survey, it placed 19th in the popularity survey for 2011. We'll take post-graduate successes over applicant popularity any day.
