Each month, the Ashland MFA Program receives calls for submissions and contest deadlines, which it publicizes in its monthly newsletter. Listed below are this month's calls for submissions.

Atlantis Award for Poetry – great opportunity for graduate students

The Poet’s Billow, an organization dedicated to increasing the exposure of poetry, is extending their deadline for the Atlantis Award to November 1st.

Fiction Writing Contest

The Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival's Fiction Contest is open to all writers who have not yet published a book of fiction. The deadline is: November 16th.  Molly Antopol, author of the acclaimed short story collection, The UnAmericans, will judge.  (Their one-act play contest deadline is November 1.)

Chapbook Award for Short Fiction or Poems 

The Black River Chapbook Competition is a semi-annual prize from Black Lawrence Press for a chapbook of short fiction or poems. Entries should be between 16 and 36 pages in length. The winner will receive $500 and publication. Submissions are accepted via submittable now through October 31st.

Ekphrastic Poetry Competition sponsored by the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. 

Writers are invited to submit original poems inspired by five works of art shown on ARTlines2 web site, on the MFAH's web site and on view at the Museum. The deadline for entries is midnight November 30, 2014. A total of 45 poems by winners and finalist will be published with the accompanying artworks in an ekphrastic poetry anthology for ARTlines2. Cash prizes will also be awarded.

Alice James Books Poetry Award 

Alice James Books is accepting submissions of poetry manuscripts to the Inaugural Alice James Award (formerly the Beatrice Hawley Award) postmarked through November 1, 2014. The Alice James Award welcomes submissions from emerging as well as established U.S. poets. The winner receives $2,000, book publication, and distribution through Consortium. In addition to the winning manuscript, one or more additional manuscripts may be chosen for publication as the Editor’s Choice. http://www.alicejamesbooks.org

The Ballymaloe International Poetry Prize

Sponsored by Ballymaloe Cookery School and The Moth magazine, this contest offers huge prizes. Closing date is December 31.

2015 William Matthews Poetry Prize

Poetry Society of America Annual Poetry Awards

Thin Air Looking for Original Work, Reviews or Interviews for Print and On-line 

Thin Air is an annual print publication with a web magazine. The publication is managed by the graduate students of Northern Arizona University’s MA and MFA programs. Submissions for the 21st issue of Thin Air will be accepted until December 15, 2014. Fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and visual arts are printed, as well as book reviews and interviews for the on-line magazine.

Heavy Metal Inspired Fiction

Barking Sycamores “Doors of Perception” theme 

Barking Sycamores is a literary journal publishing poetry, short fiction (1000 words or less), and art by neurodivergent (autistic, ADHD, bipolar, dyslexic, etc.) writers and artists. They are seeking poetry, short fiction, and art for Issue 4, Winter/Spring 2015. Theme: “The Doors of Perception.” Pieces about doors, perception, and vision are welcome as well as ekphrastic work based on the works of William Blake, Aldous Huxley, or the American rock band The Doors. However, in the end, artists may submit poetry, short fiction, and visual art that interpret the theme as broadly or as narrowly as desired. They also seek essays on neurodivergence and how it impacts the creation of literary works. Submission period: October 1 – November 30, 2014.

3Elements for Winter: Wring, Respite, Smudge 

3Elements is currently accepting stories, poems, nonfiction, art, and photography for our sixth issue, due January 1st. Stories and poems must include the following elements: Wring, Respite, and Smudge. Art and photography need only represent one element.  You can also enter one of their contests--for poetry (judged by Ravi Shankar) and for fiction (judged by Susan Tepper). Gulf Coast Journal Accepting Regular Submissions

Gulf Coast Journal is accepting poetry, fiction, and nonfiction submissions for their print issue until March 1st. They have a $2.00 reading fee. Writing Fellowships at the Fine Arts Work Center in Massachusetts 

Since 1968, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown has run the largest and longest residency Fellowship in the United States for emerging writers. Writers who have not yet published a full-length book of creative work are welcome to apply. Fellows receive a seven-month stay (October 1 - April 30) at the Work Center and a $750 monthly stipend. The deadline for the 2015-16 Writing Fellowships is December 1, 2014.

Baltic Writing Residency Opportunities in Kentucky or Latvia 

The Baltic Writing Residency has extended its submission period for the 2 - 8 week long residency at Bernheim Forest (in KY) to February 1st. The residency can be spent any time of year. The deadline for applications to the month-long residency in Riga, Latvia is December 15th.

Where are you from and how do you use your surroundings to write? I'm from southwest Indiana originally. Rolling hills, farmland, corn, wheat. LOTS of corn and wheat. AU Ranked in Poets & Writers MFA Index

The annual MFA issue of Poets & Writers is out, and Ashland University's MFA program is listed among the 26 low-residency programs featured. Of the 47 low-residency MFA programs currently available in the United States (Association of Writers and Writing Programs), AU ranks second in job placement, fourth in fellowship placement, and 11th in selectivity.  While the program did not place in a six-year popularity survey, it placed 19th in the popularity survey for 2011. We'll take post-graduate successes over applicant popularity any day.
