Each month, the Ashland MFA Program receives calls for submissions and contest deadlines, which it publicizes in its monthly newsletter.  Listed below are this month's calls for submissions. 

Red Wolf Journal seeking poetry on theme "celebration and ritual"

Red Wolf Journal is an online international poetry journal that is published quarterly. They are inviting emerging and established poets to submit their work for publication in the Fall 2014 issue, which has the general theme of "celebration and ritual." Feel free to follow this theme as broadly or specifically as you wish. Deadline for submissions is September 25, 2014.

The Puritan's annual literary contest for poetry and fiction

The deadline to enter poetry and fiction submissions to The Puritan's annual literary contest, The Thomas Morton Memorial Prize in Literary Excellence is September 30. This year’s contest features $2000 in cash prizes, publication, and prize pack of books valued at over $750 each! This year’s winning entries will be chosen by celebrated Canadian authors Margaret Atwood and Zsuzsie Gartner.

Indiana Faith and Writing Conference October 31 - November 1, 2014

You’ve just finished your first publishable work and you’re wondering where to turn next. Come to the Indiana Faith and Writing Conference (directed by our own Heather Gemmen Wilson)—a two-day event at Anderson University (Indiana) that focuses on helping writers get published. You’ll be able to attend seminars on how to write proposals, why and how to work with agents, and other useful information. Most importantly, you’ll have an opportunity to pitch your work to editors and agents. Additionally, all conferees may enter the IFWC writing contest for cash prizes, which is judged by publishing professionals.

Tahoma Literary Review Interested in Nonfiction Narratives

Tahoma Literary Review, a professional pay journal, is looking for narrative nonfiction up to 6000 words.  We're also open to flash submissions (up to 2,000 words). We are dedicated not only to publishing the best new poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, but also to paying our writers professional rates, promoting our contributors and helping their work find an audience. Philip Levine Poetry Book Prize

Sponsored by the MFA Program at California State University, this contest awards one winner with a $2000 prize and publication by Anhinga Press.  Deadline is September 30, 2014. 2014 American Literary Review Awards Open for Submissions

Three prizes of $1,000 each and publication in the Spring 2015 online issue of the American Literary Review will be given for a poem, a short story, and an essay.  Deadline is October 1, 2014.

Missouri Review prizes in Fiction, Poetry and Nonfiction

The Missouri Review’s 24th Jeffrey E. Smith Editors’ Prize in fiction, poetry, and nonfiction is now open for submissions. First-place winners in each category receive a prize of $5,000, plus a feature in our spring issue and paid travel to our gala reading and reception in Columbia, Missouri. Contest finalists will receive cash prizes and have their work considered for publication as well.  This opportunity is open to both emerging and established writers. October 1, 2014 deadline.

2015 Lexi Rudnitsky First Book Prize for Women

The 2015 Lexi Rudnitsky First Book Prize in Poetry is open for submission until October 31, 2014. This contest is open to American women who have yet to publish a full-length book. The winner receives publication with Persea, $1,000.00, and the option of an expenses paid six-week residency in Italy.

Mason's Road seeks submissions on the theme "Memory"

Mason's Road is now accepting your best Fiction, Creative Nonfiction, Poetry, Drama, and Craft Essays. The theme for Issue #10 is “Memory,” and they are looking for unique and arresting takes on this topic.

Submissions period runs for three months: August 15 – November 15, 2014.  You can submit for free any time during our submissions period, and your work will be given thorough consideration for publication. Or, you can submit with a $10 fee, and your work will also be considered for our Mason’s Road Literary Prize, which includes publication and a $500 prize to the best entry. Fogged Clarity Chicago Arts Review accepting submissions

Fogged Clarity is now accepting submissions of poetry, fiction, non-fiction, visual art and music for their Winter 2014 edition. Essaying the Body Electric New Essay Contest

Welcome Table Press is pleased to announce its first essay contest, Essaying the Body Electric. The winning submissions will be selected by judge Robert Atwan, series editor of Best American Essays. Five cash prizes will be awarded. The winning submissions will be published as part of a new online series and eventually, in a print anthology. October 1 deadline.

So to Speak Contests and Journal Submissions

So to Speak: A Feminist Journal of Language and Art is now open for submissions. Additionally, our nonfiction contest judged by Jennifer Percy and our poetry contest are open for submissions. So to Speak welcomes both new and established writers of all genders, writing about all topics. We are looking for strong, artistic work that is asks questions, inspires, takes risks, and promotes reflection.  Submissions will be accepted until October 15. 3Elements Literary Review Reveals Winter Themes and Annual Contests

3Elements is currently accepting stories, poems, nonfiction, art, and photography for our sixth issue, due January 1st. Stories and poems must include the following elements: Wring, Respite, and Smudge. Art and photography need only represent one element. 

You can also enter one of their contests--for poetry (judged by Ravi Shankar) and for fiction (judged by Susan Tepper).  Submission fee is $10, deadline is March 1.  See their website for a list of themes to incorporate and more submission details.

Gulf Coast Journal Accepting Regular Submissions

Gulf Coast Journal is accepting poetry, fiction, and nonfiction submissions for their print issue until March 1st. They have a $2.00 reading fee. GCOnline accepts submissions for Exclusives year-round. Online publication exposes your work to an audience of 10,000 unique page views, and 11,000 twitter followers.
