Each month, the Ashland MFA Program receives calls for submissions and contest deadlines, which it publicizes in its monthly newsletter. Listed below are this month's calls for submissions.

Open to all writers: no expectations or limitations regarding the amount of poetry a writer has published.
Winner receives $1,000, publication, and 100 copies.

Glimmer Train Very Short Fiction Contest
Very Short Fiction. 1st: $1,500, and publication in Issue 94. Deadline: 4/30.
Winners and finalists will be announced in theJuly 1 bulletin, and contacted directly the previous week. Second- and 3rd-places win, respectively, $500 and $300, or, if published, $700.
Any story—up to 3,000 words—that has not previously been accepted for print publication is welcome!
Please no more than three submissions per contest. As always, simultaneous submissions are okay; please just notify us immediately if your submission is accepted elsewhere.

Nimrod Literary Awards
We're excited to announce that Jeffrey Harrison will be the final judge for the 2014 First / Second Book Award, and that the award has a new name: The Berkshire Prize for a First or Second Book of Poetry.
The Berkshire Prize for a First or Second Book of Poetry is open to anyone writing in the English language, whether living in the United States or abroad. Translations are not eligible for this prize, nor are previously self-published books. Poets submitting work for consideration may be authors having published only one previous collection or writers without prior book publications. Previous winners include Mary Molinary, Jennifer Militello, and Ye Chun. Submissions are open now and will close April 30th.

Fugue Contest
Fugue is extending the deadline for submissions to our Annual Prose and Poetry Contest until May 1, 2014. As always, all submissions are considered for publication. First prize remains $1,000 and publication for both our poetry and prose (fiction and nonfiction) winners. www.fuguejournal.org
Ploughshares Emerging Writer's Contest
Are you putting the finishing touches on an essay? Polishing a poem or story? We want to read your work! Ploughshares' Emerging Writer's Contest is open until May 15 at 12:00 noon EST. One winner in each genre—fiction, poetry, and nonfiction—will receive $1,000 and publication. The submission fee is $24 and includes a one-year subscription to Ploughshares, so it's a win-win situation.

Mason's Road: Call for Submissions & Literary Prize
Mason’s Road: A Literary and Arts Journal is currently accepting submissions for our ninth issue. The theme for Issue #9 is “Truth,” and we are looking for unique and arresting takes on this topic.
All submissions will be given thorough consideration for publication. However, your work will also be considered for our Mason’s Road Literary Prize, which includes publication and a $500 award. For this issue, the award will go to the best entry we receive, as judged by Bill Roorbach, the award-winning author of Life Among Giants.
Our submissions period runs for three months: February 15 – May 15, 2014. Please look here for submission guidelines.
Black Warrior Review's tenth-annual contest is now open, and we’re honored to have Richard Siken (Poetry), Lily Hoang(Fiction/Prose), and Kiese Laymon (Nonfiction) as our guest judges.
Winners in each genre receive a $1,000 prize and publication in BWR 41.2, our Spring/Summer 2015 issue. Three runners-up will be awarded $100 in addition to publication. Each entry is $20 and comes with a one-year subscription to BWR.Finalists receive notation in that issue and are considered for publication.

White Stag is a biannual journal containing unparalleled poetry and prose from well-known and new writers. We offer the literary community a uniquely distinct taste for dark comedy, phantasmagoric imagery, complete dishonesty, and love poems to die for (and yes, pun is intended and strongly encouraged). White Stag strives to publish only the deepest emotion, the rawest of images, and the most unique language and syntax.
Issue Two's theme is "Beyond The Taboo", where we will explore cultural and societal taboos and tap into those "otherworldly" traditions, rituals, and lifestyles that may be deemed unacceptable or strange to American culture.

Our literary journal, Small Po[r]tions, aims to publish work that minimizes, blurs, or exaggerates distinctions between genres and hopes to offer a shared space for experimental creative fiction and nonfiction, lyrical fiction, poetry, and multimedia pieces. Small Po[r]tions issues have a print component with a focus on book arts and an online component featuring selections from the print issue along with media work. Submit to the Nimrod Literary Awards. The Awards offer first prizes of $2,000 and publication and second prizes of $1,000 and publication, along with a trip to Tulsa to receive the Awards and take part in our annual writing conference. No previously published works or works accepted for publication elsewhere. Author's name must not appear on the manuscript. Include a cover sheet containing major title and subtitles, author's name, full address, phone & email. "Contest Entry" should be clearly indicated on both the outer envelope and the cover sheet. Manuscripts should be stapled, if possible; if not, please bind with a heavy clip. Manuscripts will not be returned. Include SASE for results only. If no SASE is sent, no contest results will be sent; however, the results will be posted on Nimrod’s Web site. Submitters must be living in the US by October of 2014 to enter the contest. Winners will also be brought to Tulsa for the Awards Ceremony in October. All finalists will be considered for publication.
